Ships, Clocks and Stars FREE teacher preview this June

Teacher preview of ANMM exhibitions 'Ships, Clocks & Stars' and Endeavour tour.

Teacher preview of ANMM exhibitions ‘Ships, Clocks & Stars’ and Endeavour tour.

Join us for a private viewing of this fascinating and beautiful exhibition on Thursday 16 June 5.00pm – 7.00pm. Hear about our exciting new school programs and board HMB Endeavour to experience what life was really like on an 18th-century vessel. Afterwards, see the museum’s Vivid display – a spectacular rooftop projection viewed from our special vantage point.

The solving of the longitude problem was one of the most intriguing and important scientific breakthroughs in history and changed the world forever. See the story unfold through the life’s work of scientists, mathematicians and clockmakers as they grappled with the challenges of the two major approaches – time-pieces and astronomy. Follow the work of John Harrison, the man credited with solving the riddle, and see spectacular replicas of his famous chronometers H1, H2 and H3. A real highlight is the culmination of Harrison’s work, the amazing H4 – and we have the original from 1759 on display!

Even though longitude is a complex concept, our school programs break it down into digestible ideas for both primary and secondary students. We look at the maths, the science, the geography and the history through tours with museum educators, hands-on, fun workshops, a touch trolley of navigational instruments and exciting activities aboard to HMB Endeavour, all at levels your students will understand and linked closely to the Australian Curriculum. See our school programs and curriculum links here: www.anmm.gov.au/education

Arrive for this special preview anytime from 4.30 for a 5.00pm start and please join us for light refreshments. The Vivid viewing will be from 7.00pm. We look forward to sharing this special experience with you and your students.
