This week saw progress on the exterior detail of the model, with work in particular on the bow and figurehead.
Until I started, the bow was a bit of a mystery as to how it was all going to fit together. My advice for anyone trying to construct something that looks complicated on drawings is to firstly, break it down into smaller components, and then start at the top, working downwards. Once work begins, the section starts to make sense.
Making the ‘heads’ (ship’s toilets), I realised just how breezy certain aspects of life were for the sailors! I doubt they had Labrador puppies bringing them their toilet paper!
The shape of the model’s figurehead is an educated guess, there being debate as to whether the Beagle had a figurine or simply a scroll carving. With a bit of artistic license, I have created a blocky form of the dog.
Next week, I will be finishing all fine detail on the Beagle’s exterior, and starting work on the interior bulwarks.
